Journal Response For The Bread Winner
The book I have been reading is called The Bread Winner. I like this book and I’m looking forward to the next chapter. This story is based on Parvana who’s father has been taken to prison for no reason and her family has to turn her into a boy so she can go to the market to buy and sell things.
It was a normal day in Afghanistan and Mother, Father, Parvana, Nooria, Ali and Maryam were relaxing in their small home. In Afghanistan, no girls or women are allowed to leave the house ever since the Taliban took ob=ver Afghanistan. All of a sudden, some soldiers came into their house to take father away to prison for no reason! Mother tried to stop them but they beat her. Mother and Parvana tried to rescue Father from prison but instead the gaurds woulden’t budge. Instead they beat Mother and Parvana until Parvana said that they would leave and so they did. If I was in that position, I would try and try to get my father out of prison. I would do everything it takes to get him out of prison.
In Parvana’s home, it was quiet and lonely without Father. Then an idea hit Mother. Mother and Nooria were going to “transform” Parvana into a boy! Parvana would be able to go to the market to sell and buy items from the market! At first Parvana wasen’t sure about this but she decided to do it for the family because otherwise, the family woulden’t have food or water. That day, Nooria and Mother cut Parvana’s hair and dressed her in Hossain’s clothes. Parvana went to the market to finish up yesterday’s shopping before the Taliban chased her away. The next day she went to the market to sell items for money such as hern favorite red Shalwer Kameez. Parvana met a Taliban who wanted Parvana to read to him and write back to her and guess what? The Talib cried! From that day on, Parvana has been reading and writing letters for people.
Parvana also met Mrs. Weera, who was her teacher from when she went to school before the Taliban took over Afghanistan. Mrs. Weera soon moved in with Parvana and her family to help out the family more. Mrs. Weera also had a child who was just a baby. Nooria also had a job which was to watch the little ones. Everyone in the family still missed and loved Father but didn’t let it get in the way of work.
Part.3 Journal Response To The Bread Winner
In Part.3, Parvana met her old friend, Shauzia who is also dressing up like a boy to make money, but Shauzia’s job is to dig for bones and sell them. Parvana decides to help Shauzia until one day, Parvana is supposed to be home for lunch but instead she stayes with Shauzia for longer. Her mother is worried sick tht she got arrested when she comes back. Parvana tells her mother about Shauzia and the bones and she gets upset. Mother tells Parvana that she can not help Shauzia anymore. Now Shauzia and Parvana are selling things at the market together. Shauzia told Parvana that she is going to France in the Spring to be free. At the end of the chapter, Mother tells Parvana that Nooria is getting married!
